Manage Honey Bee Swarms
Prepare to catch a swarm by
- obtaining all equipment required to collect a swarm
off honey bees and confiming that it is in good repairand serviceable for use
- checking personal protective equipment (PPE) forserviceability and wearing it and using it correctly
- idlentifying occupational health and safety (OHS)hazards associated with collecting bee swams andtaking action to deal with them effectively
- observing any site quarantine in effect and any otherbiosecurity protocols
- identifying nisks associated with collecting a swarmof honey bees and taking actions to minimise thelikelihood and consequences of risks
-placing dry drawn frames in the hive box to be usedfor collecting a swarm to ensure that the collectedbees remain in the new hive box
Collect a swarm of honey bees by
-catching the swarm by shaking it into an empty box
- moving the baxed swam to a new location after confiming that the whole swarm has been
- collected-re-queening the swarm.
Manage swarming behaviour in a honey beecolony by
- monitoring the honey bee colony for signs thatswarming may occur
- identifying risks associated with handling bees that are likely to swarm and taking action to minimise thelikelihood and consequences of risks
- considering a range of control options whereswarming is likely to occur and selecting and implementing the best option
- monitoring the colony to ensure that swarmingbehaviour has been controlled and if necessary, implementing further control options.
